Attempts to reschedule it for Sunday also failed, as Boca Juniors refused to play, so it will now be on December 8 or 9 – assuming Boca agree to go ahead.
Now the CONMEBOL authorities are considering moving the decisive match to neutral turf, most likely Asuncion in Paraguay, which is where the Federation is based.
An intriguing idea is put forward by Genoa and backed by the Mayor, Marco Bucci.
“We are working on it and I hope we can bring the River Plate-Boca Juniors game to Genoa. It’d be a wonderful thing for the city and all the people of Genoa.
“There are historic links between us, as many Genoese citizens emigrated to Argentina over a hundred years ago and achieved great things.”
However, Doha is a far stronger candidate, as sponsors Qatar Airways are reportedly prepared to offer massive amounts of money to host the event.
Miami were also contenders, but appear to have been ruled out.
