Genoa are relegated to Serie B after 15 years, but their fans put on a spectacular show at Marassi and it will continue after the match.

Their fate was sealed following last week’s defeat to Napoli and Cagliari’s loss to Inter, which made it impossible for them to survive on head-to-head records.

Despite their drop down for the first time since 1995, the Grifone supporters have shown admirable passion and enthusiasm, packing into the stands of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris with over 16,000 attending today’s game with Bologna.

There was a huge banner and choreography in the stands reflecting the red and blue colours of the club and its port city status: ‘The same colours that fall into the sea when the sun sets without saying goodbye.’

The enthusiasm will continue after the match too, as there will be a march for the ultras from the stadium to Piazzale Kennedy, where they’ll be greeted by food and drink stands highlighting the best of local produce.

Genoa fans have spent much of the last 15 years insulting owner Enrico Preziosi, so when he finally sold up to American investors 777 Partners in September 2021, even relegation was unable to quash their sense of relief.
