Genoa President Enrico Preziosi and director Daniele Faggiano explain why postponing their Serie A game with Torino became inevitable after 15 COVID cases, now rising to 16.
The Grifone had Mattia Perin and Lasse Schone test positive before the 6-0 defeat to Napoli on Sunday, but within 48 hours another 11 cases had emerged.
They were named as Francesco Cassata, Lukas Lerager, Federico Marchetti, Filippo Melegoni, Luca Pellegrini, Marko Pjaca, Ivan Radovanovic, Davide Zappacosta and Valon Behrami among the players, plus staff Piero Cistaro, Alessandro Donato, Pietro Gatto and Matteo Perasso.
“Most of them were asymptomatic, we only had two who had a high temperature on Monday,” director of sport Faggiano told Sky Sport Italia.
More tests have been performed, have any other players or staff tested positive or is the total figure still 15?
“Something has happened, but it’s best to wait, as there’s a privacy issue.”
This weekend’s Serie A match with Torino has been postponed due to the number of Genoa players out of action and President Preziosi accidentally revealed the name of the 16th player to test positive – Mattia Destro.
“Common sense prevailed,” President Preziosi told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“If the game hadn’t been postponed, basically I would’ve had to pull on a shirt and play along with (coach Rolando) Maran and Faggiano.
“This virus cannot be controlled, it is spread so easily and irrationally. Of the players, Behrami and Destro have a larger viral load.”
