There are more reports that Genoa have abandoned their attempts to sign free agent Nabil Bentaleb, but there are several reasons for the breakdown in talks.

Bentaleb already had his medical for the Grifone last week and had been expected to sign the paperwork today.

However, Sportitalia reported that there were issues with his medical tests, as he has been out of action since early March following surgery on a groin injury.

Now Sky Sport Italia maintain the sticking point was the length of the contract on offer and a disagreement over personal terms.

It is suggested the player wanted at least two years, plus an option to add another season.

The proposal from Genoa was instead just one year, with an option to add another two years.

The 26-year-old Algeria international midfielder is a free agent after his contract with Schalke 04 was allowed to expire.

His previous clubs were Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
