Former Inter owner Massimo Moratti has lamented how ex-Bologna President Giovanni Gazzoni Frascara ‘paid for Calciopoli most of all’.

Gazzoni Frascara died on Friday at the age of 84, best known for his reign at Bologna, which ended with the club dropping into Serie B back in 2005.

However, Moratti believes the patron suffered most as a result of Calciopoli, given he was one of the few accusers to have come out in the open.

“We’re talking about a beautiful person, very open in a human sense, so the relationship between us was very easy, friendly,” he told Corriere di Bologna.

“There were no obstacles, even though he was the president of another club that was clearly our opponent.

“Even Calciopoli united us. He paid for it most of all, even if, it must be said, he never had a vindictive attitude towards those who had damaged him.

“He was just very angry about what his club had gone through. He fought hard to defend his Bologna.”

The 74-year-old then remembered negotiating with Gazzoni Frascara for Roberto Baggio in 1998.

“We had a chat and we reached an agreement without any particular problems. Moreover, Baggio carried a big weight in terms of salary.

“In a way, Gazzoni almost had an obligation to sell him. Of course, he was disappointed to lose a player he adored, but there wasn’t any spite on our part.

“In fact, we reached an agreement without much discussion.”
