Gazidis on Milan growth, UCL goals and Ibrahimovic impact

Ivan Gazidis underlined Milan’s continued ambitions, the importance of coach Stefano Pioli and the personal qualities of veteran forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Rossoneri broke their decade-long wait for the Scudetto last season thanks to Pioli and his squad, who edged out intercity rivals Inter to secure the league title. Milan have looked strong this season, although injuries have limited the club’s ability to get off to a flying start, allowing Napoli to fly to the top of the table.

Speaking at the Gazzetta Sport Awards, Gazidis first discussed how it felt for Milan to win the Team of the Year award.

“It was a special season for all of us, winning the Scudetto after 11 years is a very important emotion for the club and receiving this award is another honour.”

He commented on the team’s continued ambitions following their success.

“We must have this ambition: we are Milan. We always want to grow, improve every day and win again, for our fans it was a great joy. We must have this ambition.”

The Milan CEO touched on the club’s goals in the Champions League this season.

“Certainly to qualify for the Round of 16, we need to win both games and that is our goal.”

He gave his thoughts on coach Pioli.

“He is a special person. He has the values of the club. He’s a coach with clear ideas, he’s committed to developing young players. Stefano is fundamental for this Milan and for our growth.”

Gazidis discussed the work of Milan’s management in their Scudetto success last season.

“It’s a team effort, not only on the sporting side but also off the pitch, we’ve done a great job, important for today and for the future of the club.”

Finally, Gazidis gave his thoughts on the 41-year-old Ibrahimovic.

“Ibrahimovic is a person with a very strong public profile, but under this mask there is a kind, intelligent person, who has made this team and these young players grow.”
