The Ligue 1 club is without a tactician after 67-year-old Halilhodzic sensationally resigned just hours before a friendly draw against Genoa.
He had only taken over in October 2018.
According to French site Soccerlink, Nantes have approached Gattuso to ask about his availability and are waiting for a response.
Gattuso terminated his Milan contract by mutual consent after steering them to fifth place in Serie A last season.
