Gennaro Gattuso thanked Patrick Cutrone for playing through injury, but Milan “made too many mistakes” in a 3-1 win over Olympiacos.
The Rossoneri had been trailing for much of the Europa League match at San Siro, but substitute Cutrone scored twice and Hakan Calhanoglu set up Gonzalo Higuain for the 3-1 victory.
“Patrick played against Empoli with an ankle injury, he is not at 100 per cent and has to take anti-inflammatories. We really appreciate the way he’s working hard and giving his all for the group,” Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia.
“Hakan needs to find his confidence, to be less tense. He’s a lad who really cares and at times can over-think it. That is his problem.
“We knew Higuain wasn’t at his best after the injury, but he scored a fantastic goal. Our first half was too sluggish, even if we created many chances. Jack (Bonaventura) went too wide, Samu Castillejo had too many shots from distance and so did Higuain.
“I am satisfied with the result, but we can play much better and made too many mistakes in midfield. We’ve got to improve if we want to play with a 4-4-2 system.
“Tiemoue Bakayoko is struggling at the moment, but we need everyone. I am really not satisfied with how we played off the ball.
“We’ve got to transition better, as the lines weren’t perfect and that makes the defence use up a lot more energy.”
