Gennaro Gattuso has claimed he is not trying to offend Carlo Ancelotti by bringing a “different methodology” to Napoli.

Napoli beat Perugia 2-0 in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia after a Lorenzo Insigne brace from the penalty spot during the first half on Tuesday afternoon.

The Partenopei coach said the quality “dropped” in the second half but insisted they “played a good game”.

“We played a good game,” he told the reporters. “First half went well, but in the second half we dropped a bit.

“We have a lot of players out there who are doing their best. What we’re doing is not enough.

“[Hirving] Lozano played a good game, he must find continuity, just like [Elif] Elmas. In the second half we dropped and made a lot of mistakes. We will have to review some stuff.”

The former Milan coach has claimed he doesn’t want to offend the former coach Ancelotti after changing the set-up at the San Paolo.

“During these days we have received a lot of criticism. Ancelotti was a footballing maestro for me,” he said. “The methodology is different. I have read the newspapers, sites that have said I denied what Ancelotti did. I don’t deny anyone, I’m just training my players in a different way.

“The 4-3-3 is totally different from my 4-4-2, but I have no problems with Carlo Ancelotti. We need to behave well, otherwise they will use everything we say.

Diego Demme was introduced after 65 minutes and made his debut for Napoli in the second half and Gattuso is sure they can expect a lot from the German.

“He’s a boy who knows football, a dribbler,” he said. “He needs to improve. He was too high in the pitch and left holes in the defence, but he’s there because he’s been with us for two days.

“If he grows, he can give us a lot.”

The next challenge is against Fiorentina in the League, before they face the league leaders Juventus at the San Paolo.

“I expect to improve and give continuity to our game,” he said. “Against both Inter and Lazio we played well for 45 minutes and then we got in trouble on our own.”
