Gennaro Gattuso could get a new job working as a coach in Russia after links with Spartak Moscow, following in the footsteps of Massimo Carrera.

According to Itasportpress, Gattuso is the first choice to take over from Rui Vitoria after a dismal start to the campaign, which sees Spartak sit in ninth place in the Russian Premier League with just 18 points.

Gattuso was at Napoli last season, then left by mutual consent when his contract expired.

He put pen to paper with Fiorentina over the summer, but just two weeks later and before pre-season training had even begun, he again left by mutual consent.

The coach and club had disagreements over transfer strategy and Fiorentina hired Vincenzo Italiano instead.

It’s reported Gattuso’s agent Jorge Mendes is in talks with Spartak Moscow to replace Rui Vitoria, discussing a three-year contract that would practically double the salary he had at Napoli.

Spartak Moscow have history with Italian coaches, as Carrera impressed in Russia from 2016 to 2018, winning the league title in 2016-17 and the Russian Supercup for 2017-18.
