It was then he realised his blurred vision was something very serious and he was later diagnosed with a paralysed optic nerve.

“I have been training very hard for a week and at the moment I think I have 20-25 minutes in my legs,” said Gattuso.

“I’ve returned to an almost normal life, as I can now watch television and drive my car again. I only use glasses to shade myself from the sun.

“I was never ashamed of what happened to me and see no reason to. This year everything has happened to both me and Milan, but we are still here.”
