The former midfielder is currently out of work after leaving OFI Crete, and spoke to assembled media at a charity event about the future of Milan, and his own career.

“The Berlusconi family have invested in Milan for over 28 years,” Gattuso said, with rumours the club could be sold.

“There can be a negative period which lasts for three years, it happened to Juve too. The most important thing now is to revive the club, to choose the players well.

“When decisions have to be made it should be made by one person, not by many. When I was at Milan, President Berlusconi was in charge, then the responsibility was [joint-CEO Adriano] Galliani’s.

“When things went wrong, only one thing went wrong. Now it’s not like that.

“Berlusconi is a human being like everyone else, there was a beginning and there will be an end. The important thing is for Milan to be in the hands of good people, who want to take Milan back to the highest levels.”

The Rossoneri are certainly not reaching the highest levels at the moment, with Pippo Inzaghi’s side sitting in 11th, and Gattuso feels the stress is getting to his former teammate.

“Pippo was a great teammate and a great player. It’s different being a Coach, because there are moments of great difficulty.

“The only advice I’d give him is to take some time to relax, because he’s aged a lot.

“Could I Coach Milan? I still have a lot to learn, I’m working every day, but I definitely want to come back and Coach Milan.

“It’s a priority.”

Gattuso won the Champions League twice in his Diavolo career, and also assessed this season’s European campaign, giving his thoughts on Juventus and Lionel Messi, after the Argentinian ripped Bayern Munich to shreds.

“Juventus are a source of pride for all of Italian football, as are Napoli and Fiorentina.

“They played really well against Real Madrid, it’s not over because playing in Madrid isn’t easy, but we should be proud of our football.

“As for Messi, it’s almost impossible to stop a player like that. He’s like a player on the Playstation. Even apart from his goals, he always manages to create a numerical superiority.”
