“I get the feeling that when something negative happens, the team just disappears and we need to work on that. It seems as if the players are unable to react psychologically,” Gattuso told the media.
“We have got to change direction, because we’re going nowhere like this. When you wear the Milan jersey, you need to respect it. All this really hurts me. We didn’t come here to lose.
“We have a desperate need to change trend and mentality. It doesn’t matter if we have 64 per cent possession if we don’t play with vehemence and hunger. That is what’s missing.
“So many players had the chance to prove themselves. When we get a punch in the teeth, I get the feeling we never recover. Our passing was very slow and I think it’s an issue of mentality.
“A victory would’ve been good for morale. Now the game against Bologna is fundamental and we cannot get it wrong. I expected more today. We were embarrassing and the absence of some first choice players should not be an excuse.”
Andre Silva is Milan’s top scorer in Europe this season, but made no impact against Rijeka.
“We all know his quality on an international level. He struggled today and looked like a separate entity to the rest of the team. When you have the chance to play 90 minutes for Milan in Europe, you have got to do more.”
