Gatti: ‘I scored my first Serie A goal in the wrong net’

Federico Gatti admits some Juventus teammates mocked him for his own goal against Sassuolo last week, but he did the same: ‘I scored my first Serie A goal in the wrong net.’

The Italian defender spoke to DAZN after a 0-0 draw between Juventus and Atalanta on Sunday.

“The first half was excellent, we only lacked the goal. We struggled in the final 15 minutes because we were tired,” he said.

“You can never make mistakes and fight tiredness in defence. One single mistake can have a big impact.”

Gatti had returned to the starting XI for the first time since last week’s own goal against Sassuolo.

“The coach trusts me a lot. Errors do not kill me mentally,” said the ex-Frosinone defender.

“I was tired in Sassuolo and I paid for my error, same as Tek [Szczesny], but these things make you stronger mentally.

“It hurt, but I kept my head high the following day, thinking about hard work and understanding where I had gotten it wrong,” he continued.

“Somebody inside the team mocked me and I did the same, I said: ‘I scored my first Serie A goal, but in the wrong net.’

“We are improving, we must accept that we must not lose when we can’t win. Now we work for the derby, which will be very important.”
