Gian Piero Gasperini had a tense relationship with Inter and repeatedly teased the Nerazzurri after his sacking in 2011.

Inter appointed the current Atalanta coach in the summer of 2011, but his time at the Stadio Meazza didn’t last long.

He coached Inter for five games, losing four of them. He is the only Inter coach not to have won a game with the Nerazzurri, along with Corrado Verdelli, who had been in charge of Inter for one game in 2003.

Gasperini had never held back when it came to criticising the Nerazzurri in the last few years.

Gasperini had never held back when it came to criticising the Nerazzurri in the last few years.

“We had a different point of view about players and systems. I asked to sign Palacio and I was promised Eto’o would have stayed. In the end, they dumped all the problems on me,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport in 2014.

“Inter would have won nothing without Calciopoli, the trend changed with Mourinho, while Benitez deserved more credibility and I was given only two months,” he added in another interview given to Sportmediaset.

In an interview with La Repubblica newspaper in 2016 he explained: “a three-man defence was seen with abhorrence. I was given too little time to do any damage. I suffered damage, instead.

“Then it was a satisfaction to finish in front of them with Genoa.”

It was August 2018 when Gasperini told Sky Sport: “I’ve never coached a top club. Inter were not a top club, at least considering their technical values.”

Inter ownership has changed since Gasperini's time in Milan with Suning that completed the club's takeover in 2016.

Inter and Atalanta meet at the Stadio Mezza this evening with Gasperini, who said that Antonio Conte's side deserve to be the table leaders.
