Gian Piero Gasperini admits Inter ‘gave Atalanta a real wake-up call’ after their 2-0 home defeat to close the season. ‘This was the best preparation for PSG.’

La Dea had been unbeaten since the restart and could’ve taken second place with a victory, but not only lost, they also failed to find the net in Serie A for the first time since September.

“This was the best preparation for the Champions League, because Inter attacked us, they were aggressive and stopped us from playing, with a high tempo and quality,” the coach told DAZN.

“We had taken our foot off the gas a little in the last few weeks, but tonight we realised that we cannot play like that against teams like this. We congratulate Inter and also hope this can serve as a lesson for us.

“They gave Atalanta a real wake-up call. We have to focus only on improving year after year. We have a lot to improve and must keep raising the bar, at the same time taking into account the economic level of this club, which cannot be the same as the Scudetto contenders.

“We’ve had comebacks so often, today we conceded after a minute and were 2-0 down after 20, the worst possible circumstances against a side like Inter. There was a reaction, which is positive, it will be useful in future, but we must realise that it’s not like we have to start playing when we’re behind.

“Antonio Conte congratulated me at the final whistle and I did the same to him. He’s done a great job and the final table is accurate.”

Pierluigi Gollini limped off after just five minutes with a knee problem, while the team sent another message to Josip Ilicic, who is back in Slovenia dealing with personal matters.

“Gollini had a nasty knock to the knee, it’s a bruise. We would love to smother Ilicic with hugs.”
