La Dea took another big step towards Champions League qualification for the third year running, as they thrashed Parma 5-2 at the Stadio Tardini and again the substitutes made a big difference.

“The quality of the squad is important and we need everyone, not just those who are in the starting XI. We lost a few points along the way this season, but then everyone can say that, not just us.”

They could break free if Juventus and Milan hold each other up this evening, but Gasp shrugged off questions about the Scudetto next season.

“No, that’s difficult for a club like Atalanta. The indications we get from league competition are always the same, there is a clear and elevated economic disparity between various clubs,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The objective of Atalanta is always to improve. With these economic mechanisms in place, we could never start out the season aiming to win the Scudetto.”

There is still some confusion as to what will happen when UEFA react to Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid sticking to the Super League.

“There is uncertainty regarding the Cups and other League competitions. Football needs the same organisation for everyone, so even with differences between clubs, the system should favour those who get the results and do things the right way, otherwise it’s difficult to do anything.”

Nonetheless, Gasperini has no intention of walking away from Bergamo, even with reported interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur.

“I have a very long contract with Atalanta and I am very happy, but every day reports come out about some interest or other, I can assure you I’ve not had contact with anyone.

“It’d be flattering if they were interested, but if someone wants to talk to me, I urge them to swing by at the end of the season only after I have spoken to the President.”
