The Mayor of Bergamo, Giorgio Gori, confirmed the news with a statement after Gasp helped Atalanta qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

“The achievements that Gasperini reached with Atalanta go beyond the sporting dimension and set the template for a provincial club able to compete with the biggest sides in Europe that I feel reflects our city,” said Mayor Gori.

“I appreciated very much his decision to remain in Bergamo next season. I really believe he is happy here and with the Honorary Citizenship, we wish to further strengthen that bond of affection between Bergamo and Gasperini.”

The Coach was particularly touched by the gesture, which comes just days after he signed a contract extension.

“I am so very proud and honoured by this proposal,” Gasp told the official Atalanta website.

“Being put forward to become an Honorary Citizen of Bergamo is not just extraordinary, but also a reason for immense pride.

“Bergamo and the Bergamaschi have this incredible sense of belonging and unity. It is also thanks to those elements that we were able to achieve our exceptional results.”

So far, it is only a proposal, but the local council is widely expected to vote in favour.
