The Orobici wrote several pages in the history books today, equalling their all-time biggest Serie A victory after the 7-1 against Triestina in June 1952.

They also became the most prolific side in the three points for a win era, scoring 28 goals in the opening nine Serie A games, the best run since Milan’s 29 in the 1992-93 season.

Atalanta are now just three points off leaders Juventus and visit fourth-placed Napoli in the midweek round, so can they win the Scudetto?

“No,” was the reply Gasp gave to Sky Sport Italia.

“Only Juventus can lose it, but then there are Inter and Napoli, as well as the other so-called big clubs like Roma and Milan, who are perhaps considered big more for what they represent than their current results.

“After nine rounds, this all just confirms it is a very difficult season for everyone at both ends of the table.”

The Bergamo boys thrashed Udinese 7-1 today and set a new record for most prolific start to a Serie A season in the three points for a win era.

“I didn’t honestly know that until you just told me. The credit goes to the players, who fully embraced the ideas of their coach and club to work all on the same page. Every game is different, but we always believe in our approach, no matter who we are up against or the difficulties we are facing.”

This 7-1 success comes just days after a 5-1 Champions League defeat to Manchester City, a game where they had taken the lead.

“We’re trying to use the Champions League to gain experience and it helps us become better in Serie A too. We make mistakes every now and then, but we have also been scoring regularly for 18 months now and it really helps us to fight back from difficult situations, as for example we went behind today.

“If we made no mistakes at the back and kept scoring like this, then we would be even higher up the table.”
