Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini believes clubs should be allowed to listen to conversations between VAR and referees and claims La Dea was denied a ‘clear penalty kick’ against Roma.
Gasperini was fuming after Atalanta’s 4-1 loss against Roma on Saturday. La Dea saw a Duvan Zapata goal disallowed for an active offside position of José Luis Palomino. A similar incident happened the day after in Milan vs. Napoli with Franck Kessié who also saw his goal ruled out for offside.
“I didn’t see it because I was in the car,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “But to me, Saturday’s incident was different.
“Maybe it was a misunderstanding, but if Palomino was in an active offside position, the referee should have had a VAR check because VAR can’t decide if the offside position is active or passive.”
The former Genoa and Inter coach insists teams should be allowed to listen to what VAR and referees tell each other during games.
“Had the referee checked the incident with VAR, I would have accepted his decision,” the coach said.
“These audio files seem to be state secrets, but we should be allowed to listen to them. Otherwise, we may believe that something is not working the right way.
“That being said, one must always accept referee’s mistakes. For example, on Saturday, we were not awarded a clear penalty kick for a foul on Zapata.”
