Gian Piero Gasperini could follow AtalantaLazio from the stands to avoid yellow or red cards during the game and insists he doesn’t understand VAR.

Gasperini saw red during Atalanta-Udinese last week, so he served a one-match ban during Sampdoria-Atalanta on Wednesday.

Last week, he said he would follow the next game from the stands and he doesn’t seem to have changed his mind.

“I need to decide, but I struggle to keep my mouth shut when I see certain things,” Gasperini said at a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s match against Lazio.

“I struggle to understand fouls, handballs and how VAR works even if I’ve been in football for a long time, the 63-year-old continued.

“I don’t understand, the players don’t understand and fans don’t understand. There isn’t clarity. We don’t solve the problems by saying anything.

Tension grows in Serie A over refereeing mistakes

“They must explain when VAR can intervene, that’s the only way to have balanced decisions.

“There were too many incidents, too many complicated situations. We are far away from the reality of the game, it’s been this way for too long.”

La Dea have only won one of their five home games in Serie A and Gasperini expects more from his team at the Gewiss Stadium.

“We lost against Milan and Fiorentina and we need more points at home, because they are fundamental,” he said.

“Lazio are improving, they are a good team with solid principles. The season is tough for everybody, the fixture list is tight, but Lazio are a strong team.

“Palomino is suspended but he could return on Tuesday [against Manchester United], Demiral could recover. For Toloi is not that simple, he may not be available both tomorrow and on Tuesday.”
