Gian Piero Gasperini was satisfied with his Atalanta side’s performance in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina, a win that keeps them neck and neck with Napoli at the top of the table.

La Dea looked strong in the first seven games of the season, picking up five wins and two draws, and they didn’t let the international break interrupt their momentum as they hosted a misfiring Fiorentina at the Gewiss Stadium. In the evening glow in Bergamo, Atalanta edged out the win thanks to a 59th minute goal from Ademola Lookman, keeping them tied with Napoli at the top.

Speaking first to DAZN, Gasperini reacted to Atalanta’s hard-fought win over Fiorentina.

“The team also managed the final parts well, it’s a good win. We have also grown in terms of play, I expect this over the course of the season and it’s a team that has changed.

“The spirit of those who played was extraordinary, it was a game we wanted to win and we succeeded.”

He touched on how it feels to be at the top of the table alongside Napoli after eight games.

“We’re happy with this moment, let’s try to make it last as long as possible. Today’s game was an important test, a lot of guys like Soppy, Scalvini, Okoli, Hojlund are growing.

“The results help us to work better.”

The Italian coach was a little hesitant to talk about a possible Scudetto bid this season.

“We have this pink Giro d’Italia shirt that we’re defending with our teeth, it has never happened before and we’re trying to improve. We have the margins.”

Atalanta’s next match is against an in-form Udinese next weekend, setting up another tough test for Gasperini and his team.
