Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini hails a “complicated” win at Genoa, and says his side have a free hit against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League.

The Orobici fell behind at Marassi tonight, but ultimately took a 2-1 win which could have been more convincing if not for some great goalkeeping by Mattia Perin.

“Winning here in Genoa, particularly after going behind, was really complicated,” Gasperini told Sky after the match.

“Then we got into the rhythm of the game and we brought home a very, very important result.

“We eventually came out of this game well, but there are things we have to learn. The mistakes tonight weren’t down to tiredness, we just had to be more careful with opponents who we know can cause more than a few problems.

“I was welcomed by a standing ovation for my former fans and that was really gratifying for me, there’s always great affection and I thank them.

“I was very connected to this fanbase, but in a match everyone tries to do their best for their own team.

“This evening it was very important for us to win and we succeeded.”

Yesterday saw Gasperini’s side drawn against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League, and he was also asked about that.

“We’ll only know in February whether we or Borussia Dortmund have been unlucky.

“We’re facing a great team, the worst we could have got in the second pot but if we get knocked out then nothing happens, whereas we have the chance to pull off a real coup.

“The fans have also said they’re very happy, because they get the chance to go and visit a great stadium.”
