Gian Piero Gasperini says he had to make ‘difficult choices’ this season and believes Atalanta ‘must enjoy what we have achieved.’

La Dea have qualified for the Champions League for the third season in a row despite a 2-0 defeat against Milan.

“We are happy, it was a great season. I know there are trophies too, but we qualified for the Champions League again and we reached the Coppa Italia Final. Now we want to go on holiday because it was a tough season, we played 70 games in a tight fixture list, we need to rest,” Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We played our game tonight. Milan had a target to reach, and we had been good enough to remain out of the dispute [for the top four].

“At the beginning of the season, nobody would think we could do without Gomez and Ilicic.

“We lost their quality, but the team has been capable of evolving. We changed our system a little bit, but we managed to score 90 goals and to me that’s an extraordinary result.

“I am so satisfied with the development of this team. This season was the most difficult one, because of what happened and because it was challenging to make some choices.

“Right now, I think everybody must enjoy what we have achieved. It’s a problem if we are unhappy with what we didn’t get, I can ensure nobody will hold back.

“We are fighting with the top clubs that have a bigger budget than us. It’s not everything, but money can help.”
