Gasp: ‘If Atalanta want to win…’

Gian Piero Gasperini was frustrated after a 2-1 defeat to Lazio and warned Atalanta “if we want to achieve something, we need new buys.”

The Orobici had taken the lead at the Stadio Olimpico through Andrea Petagna, but were undone by a Ciro Immobile penalty and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic header.

“After the penalty we lost our shape and risked conceding a third, but until that point we had the better of the game and could’ve won it,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Clearly if we want to climb the table, then this is the sort of head-to-head match where lost points are costly. There is disappointment, but we also emerge with more confidence that we can play at this level.”

This week Atalanta sold Roberto Gagliardini to Inter and Mattia Caldara to Juventus, although the defender will remain in Bergamo on loan until 2018.

Gasperini sent a pointed message to the club hierarchy when asked what he was targeting this season.

“If the objective is to launch impressive young players, then we mustn’t feel the pressure of the table. If we want to achieve something else, we’re going to need new buys.”
