Gasp: De Boer needs time

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini believes Frank de Boer “needs a little more patience” from Inter after admitting Sunday’s win bought him time.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini believes Frank de Boer “needs a little more patience” from Inter after admitting Sunday’s win bought him time.

Gasperini lasted just three months in the Inter hotseat between June and September 2011, the former Genoa and Palermo boss having been sacked for a poor start to the season, and he urged the Nerazzurri not to treat the Dutchman in the same way.

“De Boer? The club, if they believe in him, must make realistic assessments on the possibilities of him turning their situation around,” he told Rai Radio.

“For anyone in his position, they would need a little more patience. I was actually very close to seeing my adventure end here.

“The situation was really delicate. Then there was a growth in our performances, character and confidence, accompanied by results.

“I also needed a running-in period. For De Boer, the same reasoning should apply, although the environment is even more difficult there.”

Gasperini was then asked about Atalanta’s breakout start and reported Inter target Franck Kessie.

“I find it hard to compare him to an Italian player,” he added.

“He has great physical strength and great quality, although he’s still very young. He could be another [Gennaro] Gattuso or [Salvatore] Bagni as he can do well in both phases [attacking and defending] in addition to his strength.

“He came to Atalanta as a defender, which means that often you have to be attentive to a player’s development.”
