Rudi Garcia admits he “did not expect a performance like this” from Roma, as a 4-1 defeat to Catania handed Juventus the title.

The Giallorossi needed a victory in Sicily to keep the Scudetto race open for another 30 hours, but instead they were humiliated 4-1 by the bottom of the table club.

“I honestly did not expect a performance like this,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We got absolutely everything wrong today. The only thing I didn’t get wrong was saying yesterday that the title race was over. I got that one right.”

Roma seemed to take that comment to heart, as they were unmotivated, sluggish and distracted against a side fighting for its Serie A safety.

“There was a big difference in motivation today and it was easy to see. We left our football in the locker room. I saw no running, no working, no easy passes, nothing.

“It’s a shame, as I wanted to win this game and so did the players, but we need to do much, much more. I am stunned, because even knowing first place was beyond us, we should give everything each time we step on to the field.

“This defeat doesn’t wipe out the great season we’ve had, but really do need to work hard this week and not make any more mistakes.”

Juventus instead secure a third consecutive Scudetto, so what do they have that Roma do not?

“They are accustomed to winning in Italy. We learned a lot this season, but need to end the campaign better. Not only do the fans expect more next season, but so do I and the players.”

Next Sunday Juventus visit the Stadio Olimpico and the result is now meaningless, but Garcia sent out a warning to fans.

He was asked about the Coppa Italia Final NapoliFiorentina, which was delayed last night by a shooting and saw captain Marek Hamsik discussing with ultras leaders whether to go ahead.

“It was ugly to see, including the pitch invasion after the final whistle. Only the game was beautiful yesterday.

“I will add next Sunday’s match must only be a festival of football, for Roma to show they are happy with our season and be proud of what we’ve achieved.”
