Monza CEO Adriano Galliani explained that Carlos Augusto ‘chose Inter’ and weighed in on Roberto Mancini’s decision to resign from the Italian national team.

The 24-year-old Carlos Augusto shined in his debut season in Serie A, scoring six goals and providing five assists across 35 league games, and quickly look destined to make the jump to a top club.

Inter are preparing to finalise the sale of Robin Gosens to Union Berlin for around €15m and will soon welcome the Monza left back on a loan deal with an obligation to buy clause attached, set at €13m total.

Speaking to Sport Mediaset via Di Marzio, Galliani first discussed the qualities of Carlos Augusto.

“The relationship with him is fantastic, he is a wonderful boy. We had to decide, the boy rightly wants to play in the European cups, and he deserves it, because in my opinion he is one of the strongest full backs in Europe.

“And through the European cups he thinks he can also win the shirt of his national team, which is the Brazilian one.

“So, we had to please the boy, who didn’t think of making money for him or his agents, because everyone knows that the player is at the end of his contract and would not renew it.”

He explained why it was inevitable that Monza sell the 24-year-old this summer.

“We had to choose whether to sell him this year or keep him only to lose him for nothing in a few months. It was an obligatory choice, so I think we couldn’t do otherwise.

“I’ve been a Monza fan since I was a child, so I’m as sorry as any other fan, but with your mind you couldn’t not do what was done.

“Why Inter? Because he chose Inter, because Inter plays in the Champions League, that’s all.”

Finally, Galliani gave his thoughts on Mancini’s decision to resign from the Italian national team.

“I was surprised. I didn’t understand, there must be reasons that I don’t know. I had spoken to him even recently, a very short time ago.

“So, I can’t give a judgement, because I don’t know his reasons. But he is an intelligent and rational person, so if he resigned there will be a reason.

“Spalletti or Conte? Gravina will decide as always, and he will certainly choose for the best.”

The FIGC are now looking around for Mancini’s replacement and the current two favourites are Luciano Spalletti and Antonio Conte.
