President Silvio Berlusconi brought his former right-hand man Adriano Galliani with him when he bought Monza and the chief executive has revealed the new ownership turned things around in his hometown.

“When we came here, it was a total disaster,” he told El Pais. “We couldn’t play in our stadium, the training centre was in a disastrous condition.

“We even rebuilt the entire lighting system.”

The club was promoted to Serie B this term and Galliani points at previous teams who have been promoted on the first attempt.

“We are not afraid to declare our target of promotion,” he added. “It has already happened in the past, in the thrust of victory in Serie C it’s possible to reach Serie A.

“It wouldn’t be the first time and we hope it can be repeated.”
