Adriano Galliani warns Milan can’t afford Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Domenico Berardi and Leonardo Pavoletti fit the new project.

President Silvio Berlusconi announced he wanted to build an all-Italian side at San Siro, based mostly on their youth academy.

“The project of a young Italian Milan intrigues me too,” CEO Galliani told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

“For a director there’s no greater joy than seeing one of his young lads come up through the ranks to reach the senior squad and maybe even the Nazionale.

“Right now we have 37 players from our youth academy who wear the jerseys of Italy at various youth levels.

“There are also six in the senior squad who come from our academy: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ignazio Abate, Mattia De Sciglio, Davide Calabria, Luca Antonelli and now Locatelli. None of the other big clubs have that many.”

A report in La Gazzetta dello Sport today suggests Milan are looking to expand the all-Italian philosophy over the summer.

That means targeting Sassuolo forward Berardi – although Juventus have first refusal – and Genoa centre-forward Pavoletti.

It also suggests Galliani will scrap his attempts to sign Ibrahimovic as a free agent when his contract with PSG expires in June.

“Ibrahimovic and the like have wages that are no longer sustainable by our club,” added Galliani.

“The truth is that Serie A was once a destination for players, but now it has become a transitory passage towards the big money.”
