Roberto Gagliardini apologises for being sent off for the Italy Under-21s but acknowledges “it’s not enough”.

The Inter midfielder received two bookings in quick succession against Spain in the European Championship semi-final, with the Azzurrini going on to lose 3-1.

“It’s difficult to find the right words,” Gagliardini wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve thought about it for a long time and they probably don’t exist, so I’ll choose the most sincere ones possible.

“It’s difficult to find the right words,” Gagliardini wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve thought about it for a long time and they probably don’t exist, so I’ll choose the most sincere ones possible.

“I apologise, even though it’s not enough to justify two years of hard work and sacrifices on the part of all of us who took part in this unique experience.

“I apologise for my unforgivable error, which forced me to watch as my teammates fought until the last second with numerical inferiority. It was agitating, frustrating. Unfortunately football is that too.

“After the apologies, what remain are the thanks.

“Thank you to all of those who made these European Championships unique, thanks to the kit men, the medical staff, the Coach [Luigi Di Biagio] and his technical staff.

“Thank you to those who cheered for us.

“I’m proud to have been part of this team and I’m simply just proud of being ITALIAN.”
