A statement from the FIGC confirms Inter midfielder Roberto Gagliardini has left the Italy camp not due to injury, but a potential return of COVID-19.
It was reported this morning that Gagliardini did not take part in training on Friday or Saturday, and was being sent home from the Italy camp.
The Azzurri are due to play Poland in the Nations League tomorrow evening and Bosnia-Herzegovina next week.
The assumption was that he had sustained a muscular injury, but a statement released by the Italian Football Federation confirmed it was a different issue.
The COVID-19 test he provided was inconclusive, so due to an abundance of caution, Gagliardini was sent back to Milan in order to self-isolate.
He has taken a second swab and the results are expected this evening.
Gagliardini already had COVID-19 at the start of October, so if he were to test positive, it would be a return of the virus.
This is possible in people who had a relatively low viral load and therefore did not create enough antibodies to give them immunity.
The note states Gagliardini is asymptomatic and has been handed over to the Inter medical staff for the next steps in his self-isolation.
Gagliardini played in Wednesday’s 4-0 friendly win over Estonia.
