Roberto Gagliardini effectively confirms he will not sign a new contract at Inter, so will leave as a free agent in the summer. ‘I am no longer prepared to play so little.’

The midfielder is only tied to the club until June 2023 and there have been suggestions he would be offered a new deal, but he has now confirmed he intends to move on from San Siro.

“I am convinced that I got this far in my career thanks to my behaviour and my work-rate, which I never shied away from,” Gagliardini told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am no longer prepared to play so little, because I still feel that I am in good shape and have a lot more to give. I want to play and to make my qualities known.

“We’ll see what happens in June and I will make my decisions.”

Gagliardini is a product of the Atalanta youth academy and had loan spells at Cesena, Spezia and Vicenza before the sale to Inter in January 2017 for €22.5m.

He had a rare start in this evening’s 1-0 victory over Hellas Verona, but overall this season has played just 421 minutes of football over 12 games between Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

The Italy international turns 29 in April and has already been linked with a possible move to Lazio as a free agent, while clubs from abroad are also thought to be interested.

  1. Best news of the last few years. Let’s hope he stays in Italy and weakens a direct rival. Though I doubt that any teams in the top half of the league would want this “player”.

  2. He’s not that bad. He was impressive for Atalanta, which then prompted Inter to sign him mid-season. He should have left sooner. It must be difficult to show your worth, gel with your teammates and develop when you’re playing in fits and starts.
