Matteo Gabbia’s girlfriend hits out at ‘ignorant people’ who insulted the Milan defender on social media.

Gabbia started in the Rossoneri’s defence in their 4-3 loss against Fiorentina last night.

The 22-year was among the responsible for La Viola’s first goal as he tried to shield the ball rather than clear the area after a Ciprian Tatarusanu howler.

Gabbia’s girlfriend Federica Ruggeri revealed that the defender has received insults after the match and hit out at ‘ignorant’ people on social media.

“I am deeply ashamed to be part of the same human race as ignorant and frustrated people who vent their repressed anger on 20-year-old guys, harming them,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Football is a game and so it should be considered regardless of any performance. Everyone is free to express his thoughts, but there is a limit.

“Dignity and respect for a human are still a thing, that’s the line that differentiates a fan and an ignorant and that’s who you are.”

It was Gabbia’s second Serie A game of the season. His only appearance before the Franchi clash was in a 2-0 win over Venezia in September.

The Rossoneri collected the first defeat of the season in Florence but remain on top of the Serie A table, waiting for Napoli’s away clash against Inter.

Milan return to the pitch on Wednesday, visiting Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

They’ll need a win in Spain to keep alive their hopes to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.

  1. That was a nightmare performance from Gabbia but can’t really blame him too much. He was solid enough last year when he played more consistently, but it was always going to be hard to start a match against Vlahovic’s Fiorentina after a long time on the bench or injured.

There’s no excuse for his mistake on the first goal though, even if Tatarusanu made the first error. He should’ve cleared the ball.

  2. I blame Pioli. Gabbia didn’t have a great match, but playing him from the start last night was like throwing him to the wolves. I think Pioli thought Fiorentina would sit back more than they did due to their injury situation, but instead our central defenders were under constant pressure. Kjær also didn’t have a great game, he never looked comfortable against Vlahovic, so blaming Gabbia for the defeat is just stupid. At any rate, Fiorentina had five shots on goal and four went in. It was just one of those nights.

  3. You cannot blame Gabbia for that goal. Yes, he should have just kicked it any where but Tatarusanu should never have put him in that position. Keepr 100% at fault.
He’s a young man with a lot of potential who had the misfortune of playing in a game against a very good centre forward and when the rest of his team were well off the pace. Well done to him and hopefully he gets more experience in the first team soon.

  4. @Dev
Who should Pioli have started isntead of Gabbia?
Tomori and Romagnoli are injured. Kalulu was needed as fullback.

Also, those “fans” who harass Gabbia on social media are just revealing the people they are. Low IQ sons of low IQ parents.

  5. @Dev there’s no way Pioli is to blame in this game. Tactics were very good. If it wasn’t for individual errors and easy chances missed, Milan would have won this game any day. They were better but gave it away. Can’t blame the coach for a goalkeeper who let’s the ball slip out of his hands or a player who clears it into the opponents feet.
