The Canarini won the promotion play-off Final in very dubious circumstances on June 16, as Frosinone players were caught on camera throwing extra footballs on to the pitch during the closing minutes to break up Palermo attacks.
The FIGC had ruled on June 27 that their promotion wasn’t going to be overturned, instead fining Frosinone €25,000 and ordering them to play their first two home games on neutral ground.
However, today the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) – which oversees all professional sport in Italy – announced that the punishment did not go far enough.
It was “insufficient considering the seriousness of the incidents” and the FIGC Court of Appeal will therefore have to make another ruling.
At this stage, anything could happen, including Palermo winning the right to overturn the result and take their place in Serie A.
It’s a complicated situation, as the Serie A season is due to kick off next weekend.
It also comes on the same day that the Lega Serie B announced it will have 19 teams taking part this term rather than the usual 22, refusing to accept other clubs to replace bankrupt Bari, Avellino and Cesena.
