Frosinone have officially gained promotion to Serie A after beating Reggina 3-1 to move 10 points clear of third place with three games to go of the Serie B season.

Goals from Gennaro Borelli, Roberto Insigne – the younger brother of former Napoli star Lorenzo – and Giuseppe Caso were enough to see off competition from 10-man Reggina at the Stadio Benito Stirpe.

Frosinone currently have 71 points from their 35 league matches and only second-placed Genoa, four points behind with three games to go, can prevent them from winning the league title.

The promotion winning campaign has been spearheaded by coach Fabio Grosso, best known, of course, for scoring the winning penalty for Italy in the 2006 World Cup final against France.

“I am happy,” said a visibly moved Grosso on Sky Sport Italia.

Grosso, who has had previous managerial experience with Juventus Primavera, Bari, Hellas Verona and Brescia, has seen a significant improvement from his squad over the course of the season, having finished ninth in Serie B in 2021-22.

The Canarini are now set for their third stint in the top flight and first in four years, having been relegated at the end of the 2018-19 season after finishing in 19th place on 25 points.

It had been a similar story during Frosinone’s first ever campaign in the top tier of Italian football, when they also finished in 19th and were relegated after just one year during the 2015-16 season.
