Cremonese won their first Serie A match in 27 years on Tuesday after beating Roma, allowing them to taste victory in the topflight for the first time since March 1996.

The Lombardy outfit, who won promotion from Serie B last season, edged out a 2-1 win over the Giallorossi thanks to goals from Frank Tsadjout and Daniel Ciofani. It was a great result for Cremonese, who still sit deep in the relegation zone with 14 league matches left to play this season.

Prior to this, the last time Cremonese won a Serie A match came on March 31 1996, when they beat Padova 2-1.

This was the same month that Mike Tyson won the boxing heavyweight title after knocking out Frank Bruno, Nicolas Cage won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas, the United Kingdom dealt with an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease and Magic Johnson became the second NBA player to reach 10,000 career assists.

With 14 Serie A games left to play this season, Cremonese’s hopes of survival in the topflight look slim, although they could still reach dreamland in the Coppa Italia, facing Fiorentina in the semi-finals.
