The Serie A summer transfer window is over and Lorenzo Bettoni lists the top ten biggest sales for Italian clubs, from Rasmus Hojlund to Guglielmo Vicario.

The start of the summer transfer window was slow for many Serie A clubs who shared the same approach in June: sell first and then buy. Milan were the quickest to complete a big-money sale, sending Sandro Tonali to Newcastle for circa €80m, including add-ons.

According to Transfermarkt, the fixed transfer fee for the Italian’s move to St. James’ Park was €64m, so the ex-Milan star was the second biggest sale in Serie A this summer after Hojlund, who joined Manchester United from Atalanta for €75m plus €10m add-ons. However, following his move to Newcastle, Tonali has become the most expensive Italian player ever. Multiple sources claim the Magpies could pay up to €80m with add-ons for ‘Sandrino.’

Before Hojlund, Manchester United had signed André Onana from Inter for more than €50m, while the fourth biggest sale of the summer was Kim to Bayern Munich from Napoli. The Bavarians activated a €50m clause to sign the South Korea international after just one season at the Stadio Maradona.

Beto and Guglielmo Vicario joined Tonali, Hojlund and Onana in the Premier League from Udinese and Empoli, respectively.

More big offers from foreign clubs helped Serie A sides boost their transfer budget for the 2023 summer transfer window. There were lucrative bids from Saudi Arabia, which eventually tempted Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Roger Ibanez away from Rome. SMS joined Al-Hilal from Lazio for €30m, while Ibanez completed a €30m transfer to Al-Ahli from Roma.

  1. The PL and the Saudi League are the two big spenders. Klopp was commenting that the Saudi Super League is in danger of compromising the European Leagues. But that is exactly what the PL has been doing for the past decade. They have been destroying competition In Europe becuase they outspend all the other leagues.
