While European giants are spending big money on new players this summer, Serie A is struggling financially and there are only two signings by Italian clubs among the most expensive top 20.
Liverpool, Real Madrid, Chelsea and (somehow) Barcelona are among the big spenders of the summer transfer window, while Serie A clubs have been unable to complete big-money moves.
Inter, Juventus, Milan and Roma still managed to complete some exciting signings but had to deal with a tight budget.
Inter welcomed back Romelu Lukaku on loan from Chelsea, adding Henrikh Mkhitaryan and André Onana for free, Kristjan Asslani and Raoul Bellanova on an initial loan deal with option to buy and the permanent transfer of Joaquin Correa for €23m.
Juventus signed Paul Pogba and Angel Di Maria for free, Andrea Cambiaso for circa €8m from Genoa and Gleison Bremer from Torino for €41m. The Brazilian centre-back is the only signing from a Serie A club among the most expensive top 20 in Europe so far.
The other one is Federico Chiesa who isn’t really a new face in Turin, but Juventus acquired him permanently from Fiorentina this summer for €40m.
Charles De Ketelaere is Milan’s big signing for the summer, having joined the Rossoneri for €32m from Club Brugge. The Serie A champions also got Divock Origi on a free transfer from Liverpool and made Junior Messias and Alessandro Florenzi’s moves permanent.
Roma probably had the most exciting transfer window so far having welcomed Paulo Dybala, Nemanja Matic and Mile Svilar (free), Zeki Celik (€7m) and Georginio Wijnaldum (loan).
Far are the days when Serie A clubs ruled Europe on and off the pitch, making the biggest purchases around the Old Continent.
As things stand, Aurélien Tchouameni’s move to Real Madrid has been the most lucrative of the summer so far, followed by Darwin Núñez to Liverpool and Matthijs de Ligt to Bayern Munich.
