Genoa played a thoroughly entertaining and rather long pre-season friendly, losing 3-2 to German side FSV Mainz 05 after missing a penalty.

It was an unusual match in Germany, played with four 30-minute periods for a total 120-minute match.

Federico Marchetti had the worst possible start, flapping a Jonathan Burkardt cross into his own net after just eight minutes.

New Polish signing Aleksander Buksa got the equaliser with a splendid header on Stefano Sabelli’s assist.

On-loan Inter player Zinho Vanheusden had a goal ruled offside in a tight decision, and moments later Jean-Paul Boetius beat the defender to restore the Mainz lead.

Another Vanheusden header went close before Flavio Bianchi converted a penalty for a David Nemeth tackle that was quite frankly outside the box.

Bianchi won another penalty moments later, but this time blasted the spot-kick over the bar.

Adam Szalai won it for the hosts by surprising goalkeeper Jandrei with a lob.

Genoa: Marchetti (Masiello 61); Biraschi (Eyango 91), Vanheusden (Agudelo 91), Criscito (Andrenacci 61) (Jandrei 91); Sabelli (Ghiglione 91), Sturaro (Behrami 72), Rovella, Melegoni (Portanova 72), Cambiaso (Czyborra 72); Buksa (Bianchi 61), Destro (Kallon 31)
