The 34-year-old goalkeeper made 211 appearances in the Viola jersey, playing there from 2006 to 2011m before going to Genoa and in July Bursaspor.

“I didn’t like the way things went. I stayed quiet out of respect for the people of Florence and the team, but after the transfer to Genoa I also spoke to President Della Valle,” Frey told Radio Fiesole.

“I’d walk back to Fiorentina, even to be second choice. Those were six fantastic years and I’d love to end my career there.

“I’m still in contact with Tomas Ujfalusi, Adrian Mutu and Cristiano Lupatelli. I’m happy that Lupatelli stayed at Fiorentina, as he can give confidence to younger players.”

Norberto Neto was viciously criticised by media and fans, but has recently won them over with his performances in goal.

“I trained for a few months with Neto and he has a natural explosiveness, while I think the Italian school helped him grow even more. He can become one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A.”
