French media blame Gigio Donnarumma for Newcastle’s opening goal against PSG, raising pressure on the Italy international after last week’s howler in a 5-2 win over Monaco.

The Ligue 1 giants had to thank Kylian Mbappé for keeping their Champions League Round of 16 qualifications hopes alive by converting a late, controversial penalty against Newcastle on Tuesday.

The Premier League side had taken the lead in the first half through Alexander Isak who scored from a rebound. Donnarumma had palmed away a Miguel Almiron attempt but failed to hold the ball tight, leading to the Swedish striker’s opener.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport’s correspondent in France Alessandro Grandesso, Donnarumma has been heavily criticised by French media in the aftermath of PSG’s draw.

The Italian keeper was rated 3/10 by L’Equipe and Le Parisien who wrote that Gigio was ‘entirely responsible’ for Newcastle’s goal. Le Monde gave Donnarumma the same rating, blaming the Italy international for another error prior to Isak’s goal when Gigio had made a tricky pass to Achraf Hakimi, leading to a clear-cut chance for the Magpies, wasted by Isak.

Pressure continues to mount on Donnarumma in France as his poor performance against Newcastle came days after a 5-2 win over Monaco where, however, Gigio had gifted a goal to Takumi Minamino by accidentally passing the ball to the Japanese winger inside the box.

  1. This guy is going to continue to cost Italy a lot. Spalletti has to stop caring about not hurting his feelings and start caring more about the good of the team.

  2. Vicario is way better. Let’s hope Donnarumma isn’t the goalie at Euro 2024. Donnarumma fantastic at penalties, so sub him in when they get to penalties

  3. He’s the most overrated goalkeeper in history. In EAFC he is rated a 91. This is absolutely ridiculous. He makes so many mistakes consistently. It’s like everyone wants him to be the next Neuer or Yashin but he is not even at Vlachodimos level.

  4. Dollarumma has horrible ball control with his feet and has frequent mental lapses during the play.
