Sassuolo may have rejected the offer and there is interest from Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton, but Davide Frattesi has just one club on his mind. ‘I will return to Roma.’

The midfielder grew up supporting the Giallorossi and was part of their youth academy, sold to Sassuolo in 2017 for €5m plus a 30 per cent cut of any future sell-on fee.

It was precisely due to that 30 per cent cut that Roma were all set to get a discount on bringing him back to base over the summer, but the clubs still could not agree on a sale.

After months of talks came to nothing, Frattesi never denied he was heartbroken, and now warns this is not over.

“Following the disappointment of the summer, I will return to Roma, because it would be coming full circle for me,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

The full interview will be released tomorrow, but the 23-year-old’s comments will no doubt pour cold water on reports Brighton and Hove Albion were interested in snapping him up in January for a reunion with former Sassuolo coach De Zerbi.

Frattesi’s profile is increasing with four senior caps for Italy, though he pulled out of the final friendlies due to injury.

“I won’t even watch the World Cup games, it is too painful.”
