Former Serie A defender Massimo Tarantino disarmed the stabber who attacked five people in a supermarket near Milan, including Monza centre-back Pablo Marì.

The attack was carried out on Thursday evening at a supermarket in the Milanofiori di Assago mall on the outskirts of Milan.

According to multiple reports in Italy, the attacker was disarmed by former Serie A defender Massimo Tarantino.

“He was shouting ‘stop, stop’,” Tarantino told Italian media as quoted by Gazzetta.

“I did nothing, I am not a hero.”

The assaulter, a 46-year-old Italian man named Andrea Tombolini, is sad to have had mental problems. According to reports, he had grabbed the weapon from the supermarket shelves and started stabbing people randomly.

He wounded five people, killing a 30-year-old man cashier. Monza defender Pablo Marì is among the people wounded and taken to hospital. His life is not in danger. The Spanish centre-back will undergo surgery today.

Tarantino made 203 Serie A appearances playing for Napoli and Bologna in Italy’s top flight. He joined Inter in 1997-98 but left in January after making just two Coppa Italia appearances.

He is the current ‘Chief of the Sporting Area’ at Serie B club SPAL, who recently hired Daniele De Rossi as their new coach.
