Former Serie A and international referee Maurizio Mattei has died at the age of 78 after contracting COVID-19.

The official had begun his career in 1963, overseeing 125 Serie A matches, 113 in Serie B and 82 in Serie C.

After retirement, Mattei worked at various levels of the sport as a refereeing designator, director and UEFA observer.

Mattei died this morning at the Covid Centre in Civitanova.
