Former Napoli striker Freddy Rincon died in hospital after being involved in a car accident on Monday.

Colombian doctors have confirmed the brain death of the 55-year-old who was admitted to the hospital in critical conditions on Monday after his van had crashed into a truck in Cali, Colombia. Reports suggest the ex-striker had run a red light and did not realise the bus was coming through the crossroads.

Doctors had performed emergency surgery that was not supported by his body, leading to brain death.

Rincon played for Napoli in 1994-95 but also represented Real Madrid, Palmeiras, Santos Cruzeiro and Corinthians. He scored seven goals in 38 games with the Partenopei. The Serie A giants shared a message after the news of Rincon’s passing.

“SSC Napoli would like to send their condolences to the family of Freddy Rincon, who has passed away. The Colombian played for Napoli in the 1994/95 season,” the club said in a brief statement published on social media.

The 55-year-old was working as a pundit for Colombian TV. He scored 17 goals in 85 games with the Colombian national team.
