Former Juventus striker Alvaro Morata has been ruled out of Atletico Madrid’s upcoming clash with Serie A leaders Inter in the Champions League next Tuesday.

Atleti confirmed via a club statement on Monday morning that Morata suffered bruising to the bone in his knee and strained his ligaments during his team’s 1-0 loss to Sevilla in LaLiga on Sunday.

Morata was left in tears on the pitch at the time of the incident and was replaced by Memphis Depay at the beginning of the second half.

Reports on Monday suggest that Morata, who is Atleti’s leading goalscorer in all competitions this season with 18, will be out for a matter of weeks rather than months.

He is expected to miss the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Inter at San Siro on Tuesday, February 20, but the return leg at the Metropolitano in Madrid on March 13 could be a realistic date for his return as per Gianluca Di Marzio.
