Former Juventus goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, currently a director at Ajax, is in intensive care after suffering from bleeding around the brain.

It was Ajax who released a statement confirming van der Sar was in hospital, in intensive care and in a stable condition.

They pledged to offer updates once there was more concrete information.

It is reported he was on vacation in Croatia when suffering the brain haemorrhage.

The 52-year-old Dutch legend played his football for Ajax, Juve, Fulham and Manchester United before retirement in 2011.

He spent two years in Turin with the Bianconeri from 1999 to 2001, making 88 competitive appearances.

Van der Sar still speaks very good Italian and had given interviews with the Italian media last season when Ajax played Napoli in the Champions League group stage.

The goalkeeper amassed 130 senior caps for the Netherlands too.

After retirement, he took on several different roles at Ajax, including director of marketing and since November 2016 has been the director general of the Amsterdam club.
