Former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio has died aged 79.

Gazzetta reports Tavecchio was hospitalised on Wednesday due to lung problems and his condition worsened in the last few days.

He died this morning at a hospital in Brianza, in the region of Lombardia.

Tavecchio was 79 and had been at the helm of FIGC from 2014 until 2017. He was currently the chief of the LND Lombardia.

During his time at the helm of FIGC, Tavecchio hired Antonio Conte who was in charge of the Azzurri for the 2016 Euros, being eliminated by Germany in the quarter-finals.

Tavecchio also brought in Conte’s replacement, Giampiero Ventura, who failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2017, losing to Sweden in the playoffs.

He was also named Lega Serie A commissioner in 2017. Tavecchio resigned as the FIGC President after Italy’s World Cup fiasco in the same year.

According to Gazzetta, his funeral will take place on Monday, January 30 at the Ponte Lambro.
