“It’s true that it’s difficult to maintain the same intensity throughout the game after the Manchester match on Thursday, so our main issue today was resting a few players who had fatigue,” Fonseca told Sky Sport Italia.
“Ebrima Darboe is doing very well and showing all his quality. Bryan Reynolds is young, arrived here from a totally different style of football and today was for the first time playing on the left. That’s not ideal, but we are short-staffed and had to make some changes.”
Considering how well Roma did to beat Manchester United 3-2 in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final, does Fonseca regret the approach he took to the second leg at Old Trafford when losing 6-2?
“Yes, because the team had such a good first half and we had no reason to change. What happened was that we started the second half by conceding a goal on the transitions, but the strategy was correct.”
Mourinho has already agreed to take over at Roma from next season, an announcement that was just hours after the club confirmed Fonseca would leave.
“We have spoken, Mourinho was very honest and fair with me. There’s no problem, I have a good rapport with him and of course we’re both Portuguese.”
Mourinho posted on Roma’s Instagram page a series of applause emojis following today’s game.
“I have an Instagram page too, but I don’t use it! I’m not really one for social media.”
